FOUNDER OF RECOVERY CENTER REMAINS OPTIMISTIC AS TRIAL APPROACHES

KLAMATH RIVER -- As the date of his jury trial approaches, Steve
Fisher, founder of The Way Back Recovery Center, remains optimistic
about the future.

"Whatever happens I'll continue my efforts to help people," said
Fisher from his Klamath River home. The home also serves as a
residential treatment facility and is licensed as a non-profit
organization.

Fisher's dreams for the future of the center are now in jeopardy as he
faces criminal proceedings that could send him back to prison.

In the early morning hours of Aug. 4 the Siskiyou County Marijuana
Eradication Team and the Siskiyou County Sheriffs Department
surrounded and stormed the residence as Fisher and two female recovery
patients were preparing for their day.

After being handcuffed and ordered to co-operate, Fisher was informed
that because he had 17-healthy marijuana plants growing behind his
home, that he was being arrested for growing and selling marijuana;
even though the plants were posted with a copy of a written
recommendation from a physician for the use of marijuana under
California's 1996 prop 215 law.

The result has been critical LTEs to the Siskiyou Daily News, of which one
was printed Thursday and is at:

http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v99/n1394/a11.html

The LTE says, in part:

What has happened in our society that hard work and true integrity can be
so easily disvalued? How can you place "honor" and "in trouble with the
law" in the same article?

~~~~~
Please help inform the editor and readers of this newspaper that it is an
honor to be counted among those, who like our founding fathers, have
recognized when the law -- or more exactly in this case -- law enforcement
and the DA -- is an ass.
Send your own LTE by email to  or by FAX to (530)
Not ready to be so public as to identify yourself in a LTE? How about
posting something to the newspaper's guestbook at:
Subj: Discovery Channel - Hoping to See the Topic of Cannabis Explored
From: Involuntary <>
Date: Sat, 25 Dec 1999 02:19:40 -0600
I just wrote a letter to Discovery Channel hoping to inspire them to
make a program exploring the history of cannabis in society, hopefully
in the same spirit they have explored other topics such as UFO's,
aircraft and other things.
If you want to voice your opinion as well, write to:
We live in a world with an abundance and variety of life, both plants
and animals.  In the plant kingdom there exists a plant called cananbis
or marijuana.  Today there seems to be a societal terror surrounding
this plant, though it has been used by humans around the world for
thousands of years in the past.  Is it possible for Discovery to make a
television program tracing the use of cannabis into ancient times to
perhaps uncover why, in only the last 80 years out of over 5,000 years
of recorded history, has cannabis become an evil plant with its roots in
hell?  What was cannabis used for in ancient times?
The Discovery Channel never ceases to amaze me with balanced stories
exploring both the pros and cons of many topics, yet this is one topic
I've never seen covered on any of Discovery's channels.  At this time,
such a program would likely be popular since there is a rising debate
over the use of medical marijuana and the recreational use of marijuana.
What are the roots of fascination with this plant?  What would the
result be if we used cannabis today for the same things that the
ancients used it for?
Thanks for reading
