Please consider the following for publication:
Science based, fiscally prudent, and compassionate public policy is the wave
of our future. Legislators act decisively to prevent the spread of AIDS by
allowing needle exchange programs.
The costs of ignoring the spread of HIV are unconscionable. Needle exchange
programs reduce both disease and overall cost. A study estimates that clean
needle exchange would prevent thousands of new HIV infections per year at an
average savings in indigent health care costs of $385,000 per case.

To the Editor of The Savannah Morning News:
I'm writing about Robert Sharpe's thoughtful letter: "End drug war;
fund drug treatment" (11-10-09). I say end the drug war to regain
our freedom. Our drug laws show that the word freedom is just an
empty word.
If adult citizens are not free to choose for themselves what goes into
their own bodies--even in the privacy of their own homes, then the word
freedom: is meaningless, empty and hallow.

Labels are important. This wasn't "drug-related", just as Al Capone's
famous St.Valentine's day massacre wasn't alcohol-related. Both were
prohibition-related; battles for turf made valuable by prohibition. The
drugs were merely the medium of exchange.

I'm writing about: "Fake marijuana gets attention of police"
(11-8-09). So State Rep. Peggy Mast, Republican from Emporia, wants
to criminalize it because it might be harmful. I thought Republicans
want less government intrusion. Obviously, was wrong about this.
Obviously, Republicans want more government intrusion.
Republicans want to grant the government the right to decide
what substances adult citizens may or may not consume--even
in the privacy of their own homes.

Sirs: I'm writing about Johann Hari's outstanding column: "Accept the
facts--and end this futile 'war on drugs'" (11 Nov 2009).
The so-called war on drugs is a huge industry and huge bureaucracy.
Victory in the drug war is not possible, nor is it the goal. Victory in
the drug war would mean that the drug war industry and bureaucracy are
out of business.
There are basically two types of people who support the so-called war on
drugs:
Those who make their livelihood from it. This includes politicians and
bureaucrats who are probably on the payroll of the drug cartels. (Al
Capone had hundreds of politicians and prohibition officials on his
payroll.)
Fools - taxpayers who have bought into the lies and propaganda of the
drug-war industry and bureaucracy.
Fools - who are willing to deny liberty and freedom to others but
think that their own liberty and freedom will never be in jeopardy.
Fools - who believe that criminalizing a substance will make it go
away. Suckers - who think that drug prohibition somehow protects children.
Fools - who think that giving criminals control of dangerous drugs
somehow protects children and society.

I'm writing about: "1,300 pounds of marijuana found in Ontario house"
(11-12-09).
The marijuana traffickers arrested will soon be replaced.
They always are. As long as there are buyers willing
to pay a substantial price for it, somebody will produce it
and somebody else will get it to the willing buyers.
This we can guarantee.
Why not re-legalize marijuana so it can be sold in licensed,
regulated and taxed business establishments? Pot is
substantially less dangerous than either tobacco that
contains nicotine, or alcohol.
People consume marijuana for the same reasons they
consume alcohol. Why not offer adults the much safer
alternative to alcohol?
