Sirs, I'm writing about Sebastian Shakespeare's thoughtful
column: "TIME TO THINK THE UNTHINKABLE IN THE DRUGS WAR"
(17 Dec 2010)
I'd like to add that our drug prohibition policies are probably
lining the off-shore bank accounts of dozens of our drug war cheer-
leading politicians.
The notorious gangster Al Capone made most of his illegal money from
alcohol prohibition. And Al Capone had hundreds of politicians on his
payroll. Is it unreasonable to suspect that the drug lords are
following Capone's business model?
What type of politicians would the drug lords have on their payroll?
Politicians who urge the status quo of drug prohibition or politicians
who suggest that we re-legalize drugs to put the drug lords out of business?

Regarding your thoughtful editorial: "WRONG TARGET IN WAR ON DRUGS"
(12-18-10). The 11 tons of pot was completely un-taxed.
If my math is correct, on that one shipment alone, the State of Illinois
could have collected $17,600,000 in taxes if taxed at $50.00 per ounce.
Marijuana is not a church, so why does it go completely tax free?

Switzerland used to have a very serious heroin addiction problem. Now
their heroin problem is a small fraction of what it used to be. Did
the Swiss government get really tough on drug dealers and addicts?
No.
In 1994, Switzerland started an experimental program to sell heroin
addicts the drug at very low cost, even giving it to the addicts who
couldn't afford it. In 2008, 68 percent of the Swiss voted to make the
program permanent. Have Swiss heroin-addiction rates skyrocketed? No,
they have fallen dramatically. So has their overall crime rate.
Will Thailand adopt Switzerland's heroin policy? Probably not. Too many
people, industries and institutions have a vested financial interest
in maintaining the status quo of drug prohibition.

read: Shooting spree and drug prohibition are linked.

them out of business).

This article examines the trees but misses the forest. Legal drug use
has declined more -- much more -- than illegal drug use. Table 3 of the
same survey shows that, over the past 10 years, the major legal
drugs(alcohol and cigarettes) have declined sharply, while the major
illegal drug(marijuana) has barely changed. This holds for all 3 grades;
8th, 10th and 12th. How could we have been so wrong? It means the
billions spent on the drug war have been for nothing. And it will not
change as long as the federal government issues self-serving press
releases, usually printed in the mainstream press, often without
analysis, almost always without critical comment.
