To the Editor of The San Francisco Chronicle:

Thanks for publishing Robert Sharpe's outstanding letter: "Supply and
Demand" (10-12-11).
I'd like to add that Ken Burns' outstanding documentary "Prohibition"
indicated that the alcohol cartels literally had thousands of
politicians and law enforcement personnel on their
payroll.

Are we supposed to believe that the Mexican drug cartels are not
following Al Capone's
business model?

To the Editor of The Christian Science Monitor:

I'm writing about your not-so-thoughtful editorial: " Fed Crackdown On
California Medical Marijuana" (10-12-11).

I totally disagree that: "Pot smokers are a small minority." Our
government estimates that at least 107 million Americans have used
marijuana at least
once in their lifetime. And since these estimates are based upon
so-called anonymous surveys where complete strangers from the government ask
people if they have committed a crime for which they can go to jail,
loose their employment, loose their professional licenses and even loose
custody of their own children, the likelihood that most marijuana users
giving truthful answers is zero.

To the Editor of The Arizona Republic:

Re: "U. S. bullets fuel terror in Mexico" (10-16-11).

It's not U. S. bullets that are fueling the violence in Mexico but
rather U. S. marijuana prohibition policies. When we re-legalized the drug
alcohol in 1933, our murder rate declined for eleven consecutive years.
Have we learned any lessons from this" Apparently not.

The Mexican drug cartels support marijuana prohibition. Do you?

To the Editor of The San Francisco Chronicle:

I'm writing about Debra J. Saunders' outstanding column:
"Barack Obama, drug warrior" (10-16-11). In Ken Burns' outstanding
three part documentary "Prohibition," it was revealed that the alcohol
cartels literally had thousands of politicians on their payroll, from cops
on the beat all the way up to the White House.

Am I crazy to suspect that the drug cartels are following Al Capone's
business model? Perhaps at better title of Saunders' column should
be "Barack Obama, bribe taker."

Why else do Obama and other drug war cheerleaders want to keep
marijuana completely unregulated, untaxed and controlled by criminal
gangs?

To the Editor of The Rockford Register Star:

I'm writing about Norman Bleed's not-so-thoughtful letter: "Don't
legalize drugs" (10-17-11). Apparently Bleed wants to keep marijuana
and other substances completely unregulated, untaxed and controlled by
criminal gangs--just like alcohol was when it was illegal.

Do I suggest that all drugs should be sold like they were 100 years ago
in grocery stores and pharmacies with no questions asked? No.

For hard drugs like heroin and cocaine I suggest that we adopt the Swiss
drug policy. Switzerland used to have a very serious heroin addiction
problem. Now their heroin problem is a small fraction of what it used
to be.

Did the Swiss government get really tough on drug dealers and addicts? No.

In 1994, Switzerland started an experimental program to sell heroin
addicts the drug at very low cost, even giving it to the addicts who
couldn't afford it. In 2008, 68 percent of the Swiss voted to make the
program permanent.

Have Swiss heroin-addiction rates skyrocketed? No, they have fallen
dramatically.

And so has their overall crime rate.

For the record, I have never even seen cocaine, meth or heroin (except
on TV) let alone have used it.
