Re: "Amendment 2 Threatens Communities In Sunshine State", Oct 10th

Susan Latvala is passionate on this topic, but her concern is not
justified. The first 12 states to enact medical marijuana laws(MMLs) are
seeing major improvements in public safety. As compared the other 38
states, the 12 MML states see major reductions in violent crime and
opiate overdose rate, all with no significant increase in adolescent use
of pot. Those conclusions come from peer-reviewed research using
government-funded data. The researchers have no dog in this fight; their
sole motive is to enhance their standing among other academics.

Her concern for children is also unjustified. Among the 12 states, pot
use in the 18-25 group is up, but not in the age 12-17 group. As for
kids, adults are going to learn to hide marijuana-infused goodies, just
as they now hide pain pills. At least, marijuana is not lethal.

Her other concerns will be addressed by the Florida Department of
Health, with input from legislators, as it writes the regulations to
reduce Amendment 2 to practice. We are seeing a social issue decided in
"the laboratory of the states", as it should be.

Re: Letter, "Medical Marijuana, Yes; but Amendment 2, No" 12 Oct

No question that Amendment 2 has open spaces in its wording. But it
makes it clear that the Florida Department of Health will write the
regulations to flesh out those open spaces. Key legislators will be
watching to ensure the final product is restrictive and conservative. If
you can't accept that, you probably should abstain from voting.

No drug is "safe" in an absolute sense. If the alternative is
prohibition, legalization is safer. My grandparents learned that during
alcohol prohibition. They could remember, so they knew that life was
safer before National Prohibition. We can't remember life before the
drug war because it has lasted several generations. Opening a legal
market takes illegal wealth(and its violence) off the street. Regulation
is ALWAYS safer than prohibition. The key is to decide the details of
the regulation.
