To the Editor of The Anderson Valley Tribune:

Thanks for publishing Robin Woulde's thoughtful letter: "Pardon me"
(7-22-15).

I'd like to add that marijuana is the foundation of our so-called war on
drugs. Remove marijuana from the equation and the whole drug war will
collapse.
The so-called war on drugs is a huge industry and huge bureaucracy.

Victory in the drug war is not possible, nor is it the goal. Victory in
the drug war would mean that the drug war industry and bureaucracy are
out of business.
There are basically two kinds of people who support the so-called war on
drugs:

Those who make their livelihood from it. This includes politicians and
bureaucrats who are probably on the payroll of the drug cartels. (Al
Capone had hundreds of politicians and prohibition officials on his
payroll).

Fools -- taxpayers who have bought into the lies and propaganda of the
drug-war industry and bureaucracy.

Fools -- who are willing to deny liberty and freedom to others but think
that their own liberty and freedom will never be in jeopardy.

Fools -- who believe that criminalizing a substance will make it go away.

Fools -- who think that drug prohibition somehow protects our children.

Fools -- who think that giving criminals control of dangerous drugs
somehow protects children and our society.

Fools -- who think that they live in a free country even though the
United States is the most incarcerated nation in the history of human
civilization.

Re: "Experts Say Sandra Bland’s Toxicology Report Raises Questions"
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/29/us/sandra-bland-toxicology-report.ht

Editors -

When were YOU last arrested for not signaling before a lane change?

If police were not selectively arresting Blacks for such minor
infractions, there would be no need to shift the blame to Sandra Bland
and she would be alive today.

I can't speak for Texas, but in my county (Pinellas) in Florida, Blacks
are arrested for minor infractions 7.1 times as often, per capita, as
non-Blacks. (That’s according to a 2013 report by the ACLU Foundation).
They are reported to the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting System as “drugs”,
but almost all of them begin with arrest for a very minor offense. The
arrestees resist because they know that they will not be treated
fairly. Since these arrests are done at the discretion of prosecutors,
they can be stopped.
