MARIJUANA PRESCRIPTION

Montreal -- Many, many thanks for William Johnson's commentaries on the
unbelievable irrationalities underlying the anti-marijuana laws (columns --
July 26, Aug. 2). Your editorial (Aug. 2), however, favouring a cowardly
half-baked measure -- i.e., decriminalization of pot while keeping it
illegal -- is not quite what the United States needs: shock treatment!

If the emperor has no clothes, say so, rather than opting for a measure
that further encourages a disrespect for law on the part of the next
generation. Canada should just pull the plug on the whole mess, erase the
criminal records of those whose lives have been destroyed already by our
so-called law, and await the flood of welcome tourists and refugees from
the oppressive dictatorship to the south.
