MORE THAN POT IN AMSTERDAM

To the editor:

I am just a kid from the Annapolis Valley trying to get and education at a Maritime university, and I just finished reading the letter to the editor in which George Publicover says that pot is harmful and we should never think of legalizing it (Pot is Harmful, Aug. 3).

OK, it will never happen and, yeah, smoking the stuff isn't like drinking spring water, but the comment about Amsterdam is what got me to the keyboard.

Yes, it's somewhat legal there - so? Who cares? I have never been to Amsterdam. But I am sure that all those strung-out people wandering the street at night Publicover mentioned are not just on pot. Remember, pot is not the only drug around; it is not even called a hard drug. There is still heroin, crack, LSD, and don't forget that trend of ecstasy. I am not defending the people who smoke pot; I am defending the plant, which can't stick up for itself. Just leave pot alone, and why not try bugging all those alcohol-drinking deadheads wondering around at night? Now, there is a drug that has killed and maimed more then pot ever will.
