FUND DETOX CENTER

Mary Newman is right (letters, Feb. 28) in saying society should not enable
the addict. But we cannot turn our backs and ignore the problem.

In this community when people bottom out and want or need help, the only
facility they can turn to is Buckley House (The Register-Guard, Jan. 29),
and it is dying for lack of funding. A person in need of detox has nowhere
else to go safely. Buckley House can help the person become rational (which
you have to be to enter a halfway house or rehab center) and make a life
decision to change.

So, we either fund Buckley House or we pay the cost of addiction: increased
crime, broken families, increased cost of goods, more jails and resulting
court costs, more gated communities, paranoia.

Wake up, folks. Every inaction causes reaction.
