BCMA TO DEBATE POT LEGALIZATION AT ANNUAL MEET

A resolution on the health risks of marijuana will be among the two dozen
resolutions to be debated at the annual meeting of the B.C. Medical
association later this month.

The resolution says the BCMA should urge the federal and provincial
government to consider the serious health consequences for young people in
any changes to the status of marijuana.

"It is important that the evidence on this drug be considered when deciding
issues such as decriminalization or the use of "medical marijuana", the
resolution says. It is addictive, impairs learning, can lead to hard drug
use and increases chances kids will drop out of school, it continues.

The BCMA meets June 28, to July 1 in Victoria. Other resolutions include a
call for mandatory helmet use when snow boarding, prohibiting the use of
hand held cell phones while driving, and treating violence in sports using
the regular laws of society.
