AOC HITS DRUG LAW

AUSTRALIAN governments have failed to introduce tough penalties to treat
sports drugs as harshly as narcotics, a new report claims. An Australian
Olympic Committee (AOC) submission to a Federal Parliamentary inquiry on
substance abuse calls for sports drugs to be treated like heroin.

It says federal and State governments had moved in the right direction, but
had failed to introduce appropriate penalties to stamp out sports drugs
here before the Olympics.

While praising new Customs measures and approaches in some states, the AOC
wants a national taskforce to tackle the problem and calls for harsh
penalties for those who use, peddle or make such drugs.
