LONG BALLOT COMING IN NOVEMBER

Seven statewide measures and as many as 28 statewide initiatives will show
up along with the candidates.

Oregon voters face a long ballot in the Nov. 7 general election.

Besides local and state candidates and measures and presidential and
congressional contenders, they also will decide seven statewide measures
placed on the ballot by the 1999 Legislature and one referendum. And then
there are the statewide initiatives.

Sponsors submitted petition signatures for 20 initiatives by Friday's
filing deadline. One of them, relating to prepayment of state real estate
loans, will not qualify for the November ballot because an initial sampling
put it short and because sponsors failed to submit additional signatures
for it.

The secretary of state has until Aug. 4 to verify signatures and qualify
the measures for the ballot.
