INJECTING ROOMS REJECTED

PLANS for five injecting rooms in Melbourne could be doomed.Acting Premier
John Thwaites yesterday conceded it was unlikely that all the centres would
go ahead. "There may only be two, there may be more," he said.

A trial of five injecting centres, more detoxification centres, increased
policing and education campaigns are part of the Bracks Government's drug
strategy.

Two municipalities yesterday vowed to proceed with injecting rooms, saying
they had community support for the plan to help stop addicts dying from
heroin overdoses.

But Greater Dandenong Council has refused an injecting room and the
Maribyrnong and Melbourne councils have yet to decide.
