RACE-ING THE DRUG WAR

Re "Former police chief battles with 'war on drugs'," Daniel Weintraub
column, Dec. 26: The drug war was a big part of President Nixon's strategy
to politically secure the South by criminalizing white youth and nonwhite
people generally. Why? Many of them had opposed the color line of American
apartheid during the civil rights and Vietnam War protests. Such popular
movements helped weaken white racism. White racism strengthens capitalism.
