ATTACKS NO EXCUSE FOR BAD POLICY

It is outrageous and shameful the way the proprietors of the drug war
are popping their heads back up in the media following the horrors of
Sept. 11 ("There's urban terrorists too," Sept. 30).

For a long time now, their drug war has been steadily exposed for the
bastion of ignorance and prejudice that it is, but these careerists
of misplaced police authority and entrepreneurs of ignorance are not
going to let that stop them. They have a good thing going. Huge
budgets, seized sports cars and playing at James Bond is a hard habit
to break.

Using the 6,000 deaths in New York and Washington, D.C., however, is
shameless and betrays a huge defect in the morality of these
self-appointed guardians of our morality.

The drug war is wrong for a myriad of reasons we all understand. That
the terrorists have used its black markets as a source of funds is
another reason against the drug war, not a salvation for it.
