DRIVERS TO BE TARGETED FOR ILLEGAL DRUGS

The state is to crack down on drivers using drugs after research showed
nearly 40pc of blood and urine samples contain traces of illegal
substances, in particular cannabis.

Junior minister Bobby Molloy said the Department of Environment is backing
a two-year programme of drug analysis by the Medical Bureau of Road Safety.

Initial findings of a preliminary analysis of samples submitted between
July and December 1999 found 37pc testing positive for illegal drugs, most
commonly cannabis.
