DEPRAVED ON-ACCOUNTA?

In the headline article on page A-6 of the Feb. 13 edition about problems
related to the war on drugs, you quoted Katharine Huffman as saying "Civil
forfeiture is a good example where essentially a person's Constitutional
right to due process before depravation of their property is just gone."

Is it really necessary for the authorities to deprave (pervert, corrupt) a
person's property just because the person has been nabbed for possible
illegal drug activity? It seems to me that just depriving a person of
property is already a rather severe act!
