FORMER TIJUANA POLICE CHIEF'S SON SENTENCED FOR SMUGGLING

CHULA VISTA, Calif.- The son of a slain Tijuana police chief was given
credit for time served for smuggling marijuana across the border.

Jesus Alfredo de la Torre Salcedo, 22, is the son of Alfredo de la Torre
Marquez, the Tijuana police chief gunned down two years ago by gunmen
working for a drug cartel.

Jesus de la Torre was arrested May 18 after U.S. Customs Service inspectors
found 33 pounds of marijuana in his car. He pleaded guilty last month and
was sentenced Wednesday.

De la Torre claims he was unaware that the vehicle contained drugs when he
borrowed it from a friend. After meeting friends in the United States,
Torres was supposed to have delivered the car to a third party.

He served 37 days in jail, and has been placed on probation. De la Torre
now faces deportation back to Mexico.
