TECUMSEH REINSTATES POLICY

TECUMSEH -- The Tecumseh School Board on Monday night reinstated a
controversial drug testing policy for students participating in
extracurricular activities, Superintendent Tom Wilsie said. The board voted
unanimously, 5-0, to reinstate the policy. On June 27, the U.S. Supreme
Court in a split decision upheld the district's policy of drug-testing
students involved in such activities such as sports, band, choir,
cheerleading and FFA.

Wilsie said students will submit to a drug test at the beginning of the
fall semester for the 2002-03 school year. After that, random drug tests
will be taken, he said.

Wilsie said about 600 Tecumseh students in both the middle school and the
high school have participated in extracurricular activities in the past.

The policy was challenged in 1998 by former student Lindsay Earls and the
American Civil Liberties Union.

Wilsie said he did not know the cost of drug-testing to the district, but
the district plans to continue with the testing each year.
