GRANT SHOULD HELP PRC

For the fifth year in a row, the Parenting Resource Center of Mower County,
Inc. has received a Drug-Free Community Support program grant from the U.S.
Department of Justice.

The PRC has earned this grant through its work with families and the
information it provides. Parents can get their children free drug
screenings through the center if they suspect their child may be using
drugs. Parents can then get information on how to help their child stay off
drugs.

The almost $75,000 grant they received will go toward programs that
continue to reduce substance abuse, increases commitment to a drug- free
lifestyle in 20 percent of the adolescent population, and make commitments
to decrease substance use behaviors andto work with local elected officials
to enforce city alcohol, tobacco and curfew ordinances.

These goals are ambitious to say the least. Drug sales are a problem in
Lyle, according to police. Law enforcement recently announced that a large
number of businesses failed the tobacco compliance checks.

This grant gives the PRC a great opportunity to improve the services it
already provides. We wish them luck and hope their work earns them another
grant next year.
