SENATE CARES FOR OUR YOUTH

Re "Going to pot," (editorial, Sept. 5): As a parent, I am so relieved to
know that someone out there cares enough about youth to advocate age
restrictions and controlled distribution of cannabis.

If the government acted on this report, many 14-year-old dealers would be
out of work, and the number of youth smoking would be reduced because the
"forbidden" quality that attracted them in the first place would be gone.
The drug warriors, such as the police and U.S. drug czar, sound pathetic as
they trot out their tired old rhetoric to defend their livelihood against
documented evidence, findings of fact accepted by the courts, and most of
science. Why are they even permitted to publish discounted theories such as
"the gateway" and potency?

Good work senators, and if Parliament doesn't act on it, I hope the Supreme
Court does.

Debra Harper

(We suspect Parliament is hoping for just that)
