SMOKING OUT THE ENEMY

Regarding changes in Canada's marijuana laws, U.S. drug czar John Walters
says, "We intend to protect our citizens. We have no choice" ["Canada's Pot
Proposal Worries U. S.," Oct. 15].

Meanwhile, terrorists have crashed jetliners into two of our largest office
buildings, killing thousands of innocent people. Other foreign agents are
plotting to kill as many Americans as they can with chemical, biological
and nuclear weapons. And in the Washington area, a sniper is killing
citizens with a long-range rifle.

Yet our government wants to protect us from a natural herb that has never
killed anyone in the 5,000-year history of its use?

It seems to me our government should protect us from our enemies - not
ourselves.
