Shaw's letter, "Are the inspections in projects needed?" I hope that I can answer his questions sufficiently regarding this matter. Before the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office began patrolling the Lafayette Housing Authority developments over a year ago, the developments were a hot-bed of activity for illegal drugs, prostitution, domestic abuse and other criminal activity. Many of the residents of the developments are either mentally/physically handicapped, senior citizens, or live alone without caretakers or guardians. The criminal element from outside the developments recognized these good people as easy prey. The patrols and inspections by the Sheriff's deputies have resulted in numerous arrests for prostitution, possession and/or use of illegal drugs, possession of illegal drugs with the intent to distribute, domestic abuse, theft, and the arrests of felons with outstanding warrants, and the removal of unauthorized persons living in the apartments. Patrols in the developments have resulted in the recovery of stolen vehicles and other property. Perhaps one of the deputies knocked on Mr. Shaw's door at a time inconvenient for him and his family. If that be the case, I apologize. As a general rule, the deputies will not knock on anyone's door unless there is a light on in the apartment. I realize that having someone knock on your door four or five times a week may seem excessive, but it is the excessive presence of the deputies that have helped to turn the "so-called projects" into quiet, safe neighborhoods. The majority of the residents that I come in contact with continually express their gratitude for the patrols/inspections. This is especially true of the senior citizens and the handicapped. I would also like to point out that the deputies that patrol the developments have the option to work other assignments, but choose this particular duty because each of them personally believe that all of the residents of the Lafayette Housing Authority deserve to live in a quiet, safe neighborhood. I personally attend the Lafayette Housing Authority areawide meetings for the residents on the second Wednesday of every month, and will be glad to answer any questions concerning the weekly patrols.
