DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) is a joint program between the police and the area elementary schools with a mandate to prevent drug abuse in children and youth. According to DARE OPP officer Chris Dewsbury, the program is designed to help students recognize and resist the many pressures that influence them to experiment with alcohol and drugs. DARE offers a variety of activity-oriented techniques which help students to think for themselves when problem solving. The focus of drug abuse prevention for the primary and junior grades is that of drug safety. "The particular emphasis of this instruction is on helping students become aware of the potential dangers in the misues of drugs," said Dewsbury. "There is a recogniition of the need at this level to help students develop awareness that alcohol and tobacco are also drugs." - --- MAP posted-by: Beth
