SECURITY AT JAMAICAN PORTS

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Dec. 19 (AP) - A tide of illegal arms and drug shipments
has prompted Jamaica to beef up security at its two main seaports,
officials said today.

The program, valued at $684,000, will increase surveillance at Kingston and
Montego Bay, said Byron Lewis, a Port Authority spokesman. The measures are
also intended to fulfill new American requirements on port security put in
place after the Sept. 11 attacks.

The new security will include motion-detection cameras, to be installed
early next year, X-ray scanners and an electronic fingerprint system to
access to port areas, officials said.
