GROW-OPS LEAD TO GANG MAYHEM AND MURDER

Paul Willcocks completely misses the very real and dangerous
connection between marijuana grow-ops, organized crime and public
safety (Coleman dangerously backwards on drug issue, Dec. 20).

This multi-million dollar business frequently results in shootings,
robbery, gang violence and murder. Organized crime groups use B.C.
marijuana as a commodity to trade in harder drugs, illegal guns and
prostitution.

Add to this the growing toll of destroyed homes in many communities
and residents who live in fear of organized crime in their
neighbourhood, and you have a serious problem that has the potential
to affect any British Columbian.

By ignoring these destructive elements, Mr. Willcocks misses the
story. The real story is that we need an integrated response to this
issue. That's why we're working with law enforcement, the judiciary
and Crown prosecutors to find long-term solutions. To do anything less
is irresponsible.
