DEALERS WILL MAKE PROFIT AS LONG AS DRUGS ILLEGAL

I have to disagree with Opinion Page Editor Tom Barton's Feb. 27 column,
"Why the drug dealers are smiling." They aren't smiling because "elected
officials, unfortunately, seem determined to make pushing less perilous."
Drug dealers are smiling because drugs are illegal. A quote from a felon in
a letter to our legislators said it all: "Just remember that whatever you
do, make sure drugs stay illegal. It would cause us to lose our market in
America if you did anything different. That would take away the profit we
use to support our gangs, dealers and other illegal activities. We know we
can count on you just like we have in the past."

Drug dealers know it doesn't matter how many drug enforcement people you
put on the street, nothing will stop the flow of drugs except education and
information. Prohibition funds drugs.
