FED DRUG COP KILLS SUSPECT IN STRUGGLE

A drug suspect was gunned down yesterday in Brooklyn by a plainclothes Drug
Enforcement Administration agent after a wild car chase and a scuffle,
police and DEA officials said.

David Egbert Dewgard, 31, was fatally shot at the corner of New York and
Foster avenues in East Flatbush at 11 a.m., during a joint drug task force
operation by members of the NYPD and the DEA, officials said.

Three kilos of cocaine were found under Dewgard's car, but no weapon was
recovered, police said.

Dewgard, a father of three who relatives say ran a family-owned printing
shop, was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital.

"There was a drug-enforcement operation and a suspect was shot during a
struggle with a special agent," said DEA Assistant Special Agent John Gilbride.

The drama unfolded when Dewgard picked up the cocaine at an undisclosed
Brooklyn location and the DEA agent followed him, authorities said.

When the agent tried to pull him over, Dewgard allegedly rammed his black
Maxima into the DEA vehicle - and sped a few blocks to New York and Foster
avenues.

After crashing into another car, Dewgard was tackled by the agent when he
tried to flee. A fight ensued and the suspect was fatally shot once with a
.40-caliber revolver, authorities said.
