DRUG ENFORCEMENT UNAFFECTED

The recent controversy regarding the move toward decriminalizing the
possession of small amounts of marijuana has affected the way police
agencies are processing drug occurrences. Sarnia Police Chief Bill O'Brien
has advised his officers to use discretion in situations that involve the
possession of marijuana under 30 grams.

Officers will seize and process the drug, but not effect due process at that
time. Instead, they will fully document the incident with a view to possibly
instituting a charge following clarification of the law relative to the
ongoing appeal. Enforcement of all offences other than simple possession of
marijuana under 30 grams and other drugs and controlled substances remains
unaffected.
