FORT WORTH STORE WORKER SHOOTS UNDERCOVER COP

FORT WORTH - Authorities say they are trying to determine whether an
undercover narcotics officer followed policy before she was shot by a
convenience store owner's son who feared he was being robbed. The
officer, who was listed in serious condition Friday, had her gun drawn
and was wearing a hood over her head and a police raid jacket Thursday
when she and two other officers entered the store, police Lt. Jesse
Hernandez said. No one else was injured.

"What she said when they entered, I don't know," Hernandez said,
adding that undercover officers making arrests often wear hoods that
cover most of their faces. "Obviously, we will go back and review
policies and procedures."

Bao Nguyen, 28, whose family owns the E Z Food Store, said he feared
robbers were storming inside and did not know the woman was an
officer. Police had told him in the past to carry a gun because of
possible theft, he said.

He was questioned after the shooting and released without being
charged, but Hernandez said the case may be presented to a grand jury.

"The mask I saw very clear," Nguyen said Friday, adding that he wanted
to apologize to the officer and wish her a complete recovery.

Another man had sold a $20 rock of crack cocaine to undercover
officers on the street and then walked into the store, Hernandez said.
Three other undercover officers then went inside.

The officer's name was not released because of the nature of her job.
She has worked for the department since 1995.

James E. Crenshaw, 27, was arrested and charged with delivery of a
controlled substance.
