In 1969 the federal drug enforcement budget was $65 million. Last year it was $19.2 billion, greater than a 295 fold increase. In 1969 we had about 200,000 total prisoners. Now we have greater than 2 million prisoners, thanks primarily to our counterproductive war on certain (politically selected) drugs. In 1969 the use and production of crystal meth was very rare by today's standards. Obviously, what we are doing regarding our drug abuse problem is not working.
