DRUG WAR BRINGS UNNECESSARY RISKS

One of the main problems our law enforcement agencies face today is
the unnecessary risks associated with adult drug prohibition, the
so-called drug war ("Critiquing Portland police," News Focus, Aug.
26).

We are confident that most senior police officials -- albeit secretly
- -- agree with us. There are much smarter, safer and cost-effective
ways to control dangerous drugs while respecting adult freedom of
choice and denying the enormous drug profits that now flow to both
criminals and terrorists.
