REACTION TO CLINIC CLOSE-MINDED

It was shocking to see such a close-minded opinion about the methadone
clinic that is coming to our county ("Residents don't want to draw addicts,
dealers," Oct. 9 letter). For someone to think that the only addicts are
those that beg, steal and prostitute for the drug of choice is absurd.

Many S.C. residents are in desperate need of this clinic because of their
addiction to the powerful drug OxyContin. These addicts are normal people
just like you and me. They work each and every day of their lives and have
families just as we do. The only flaw they have is their addiction to a
prescribed painkiller that they get by legal means.

This clinic should be welcome. It will not only reduce the health-care cost
for addicts but will also bring some relief to their families, as well.
