GO-CART DONATED TO SHELBY POLICE DEPARTMENT FOR DARE

SHELBY -- A discarded, rusted, yellow-painted go-cart has now become a
shiny red, white, black and blue one-man vehicle for the Shelby police
DARE program.

The go-cart, which had a van-like fiberglass body of yellow faded
paint with brown stripes, was donated to the department by Shelby Golf
Carts, said patrolman J.C. Magers, who coordinates the police
department's Drug Abuse Resistance Education program.

Premier Graphics, Baker's Collision, Glen's Surplus Sales and
Decorating Inc. worked on the vehicle free of charge. When completed,
Magers had a "little brother" DARE patrol car to compliment his "big
brother" DARE patrol car.

"Businesses in Mansfield and Shelby made this happen," Magers said. "I
didn't know it would look as well as it does."

As well as looking good, the vehicle -- powered by a lawn-mower engine
- -- makes heads turn when it hits the streets.

"People love it," said patrolman John Gunisinger, who rode the one-man
vehicle in the Shelby Halloween parade. "People were going nuts when
they saw it. It was in front of the DARE car leading the way, and
people were throwing candy at me."

Magers said he plans to use the vehicle at special events and for
various DARE programs.

"It matches my car right down to the colors and logo," he said. "It is
really something to see. When people saw it, they were going crazy."
