Whoever gunned down Guillermo Gonzalez Calderoni in McAllen this week apparently agreed. Gonzalez Calderon once had been one of Mexico's most feared federales and had made enemies on both sides of the Rio Grande. He had become inexplicably rich during his nine-year tenure. Mexico wanted him extradited from McAllen, where he had been living in self-imposed asylum. And powerful drug dealers who allegedly bribed the flamboyant cop wanted him dead because they thought he double-crossed them. Gonzalez Calderoni's murder may never be solved. But, clearly, anyone entering or suspected of entering the illegal drug trade runs a risk, whichever side of the border he or she lives on. The cold-blooded underworld respects no international boundaries. - --- MAP posted-by: Doc-Hawk
