ASHCROFT'S SHORT-TERM MEMORY LOSS?

Thanks for noting the recent federal conviction of cannabis writer Ed
Rosenthal for cultivating medicinal pot in California, "Ask About Ed"
["Expresso," Feb. 13].

It seems that the only way that John Ashcroft's Justice Department can
get a jury to convict a medicinal cannabis grower is by preventing the
jury from hearing the true facts of the case. Rosenthal's actions were
not only legal under California law, but also sanctioned by the City
of Oakland.

It's no surprise that stunned jurors called for Congress to act to
change federal law after they discovered how they had been duped. Rep.
Barney Frank (D-MA) is about to reintroduce his bipartisan States'
Rights to Medical Marijuana Act in Congress. Last session's version,
HR 2592, attracted 42 co-sponsors, but only one, Rep. Tammy Baldwin
(D-Madison), was from Wisconsin.

Please contact your congressional representatives and tell them it's
time to catch up with the 80% of Americans who support re-legalizing
medicinal pot. And while you're at it, please call or write Gov. Doyle
and your state lawmakers and ask them to support the state medical
marijuana bill that Reps. Mark Pocan (D-Madison) and Frank Boyle
(D-Superior) will be introducing in the coming months.
