SANT LOOKS INTO MURDERS

The Crime Suppression Division will ask the national police chief to
investigate the shooting of a couple in Phetchabun, after their son asked
the prime minister to intervene.

CSD investigators have been looking into the slaying of Thanom Montha, 49,
and Kwanla Puangchompu, 40, after their son, Suwit Baison, 23, an employee
at Channel 11, lodged the petition last week.

The CSD will ask Pol Gen Sant Sarutanont, the national police chief, to
investigate. Police at Na Chaliang have started inquiries.

Ten investigators are looking into the shootings and the CSD team led by
commander Pol Maj-Gen Surasit Sangkhapong is expected to go to Phetchabun to
gather evidence and question witnesses this week.

Insisting that his parents were not involved with drugs, Mr Suwit has asked
the prime minister to intervene. He is worried police will treat the case as
a drug-related killing and order the case closed.

The source close to CSD said the couple were shot soon after going to Na
Chaliang police to give them information about drug traffickers. The couple
were reportedly on the police blacklist.

Mr Thanom, who was Mr Suwit's stepfather, was arrested and prosecuted on
drug related charges five times between 1999-2003 and Mrs Kwanla arrested
last August for possessing speed and marijuana.
