CHIEFS DONATE $300GS TO KEEP KIDS OFF DRUGS

Ontario's police chiefs are taking aim at drug abuse and firing money at
community solutions.

The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police announced a $300,000 grant
program yesterday that gives money to groups addressing drug abuse among
young people.

Public Safety and Security Minister Bob Runciman offered up $50,000, while
grocery giant A&P kicked in $250,000.

"Our government will continue to be an active partner in the war against
drugs," said Runciman.

Toronto Police Chief Julian Fantino said the initiative combats the much
larger connection between drugs, gangs and violence that so many kids face.

"They're so exposed to illicit drugs and often make the wrong choices,"
said Fantino.

A two-year-old local publication called The Magazine -- Not for Adults,
sold in A&P stores across the province, will also contribute part of its
revenues to the chiefs' Substance Abuse Grant Program.
