HUMAN BEINGS DESERVE HUMANE CONSIDERATION

What Mark Smith (Letters, March 14) fails to realize is that murderers, drug
dealers, alcoholics, gamblers, and other convicted residents, students and
athletes are all human beings and should be treated as such.

Rehabilitation is the answer, not the death penalty or draconian
"three-strikes" laws. It's too bad there isn't enough money available to
appropriately fund good programs to help these people, whether in custody or
not.

When was the last time Mr. Smith donated to programs like the Maui Drug
Court, the Maui Mental Health Association or Maui Economic Opportunity? When
was the last time he volunteered his time at Big Brothers/ Big Sisters or a
local youth center?
