SOGLIN IS OUT OF TOUCH ON POT

Thanks to Progressive Dane for hosting the March 19 mayoral debate, and The
Capital Times for noting it in an editorial March 21.

I am pleased that both candidates support re-legalizing medical marijuana.
A Chamberlain Research Poll conducted in February 2002 found that nearly
92% of Dane County residents agree.

But the Capital Times was correct to term Soglin's failure to also support
legalizing adult use of cannabis as tepid. Soglin was mayor in 1976 when
Madisonians voted to legalize both the personal use of marijuana on private
property as well as medical use. Soglin was mayor in 1977 when the City
Council codified the vote into Ordinance 23.20. For Soglin to still be
opposed to full legalization of cannabis today suggests that he is out of
touch.

If Soglin can't learn from the past, how can he lead into the future?
