AMHERSTBURG POLICE TAKE PART IN RACING AGAINST DRUGS

LEAMINGTON -- Police forces from Essex County, Windsor and outside the
immediate area joined forces in the fight against drug abuse.

Racing Against Drugs wrapped up Tuesday after two days at the Leamington
Kinsmen Recreation Complex. This was the county portion of the event with
it having already been held at the Cleary International Centre in Windsor.

Approximately 4,300 students - mostly Grade 5 - toured the event where the
various police and other agencies had booths set up. Other agencies include
fire, customs, health officials and the Coast Guard. Mad Science was also
there giving presentations. The Grade 5 level was targeted to get them one
year prior to entering the Values, Influences, Peers (VIP) program.

The event saw everything from race cars to games as well as a variety of
different displays. Amherstburg Police Services joined forces with LaSalle
Police in presenting a pig lung demonstration designed to compare a "good"
lung with a lung in poor health.

"Every booth has an anti-drug message," said Const. Joan Lovell of
Amherstburg Police.

The Leamington site was chosen two years ago to allow greater access for
county schools. Malden Central Public School was an example of an Essex
County school taking advantage. Overall, the Racing Against Drugs program
has been going on for eight years. Racing Against Drugs originated in
London before the idea was brought down to the Windsor area.
