WE WANTED LEGALIZATION

OTTAWA'S LAST-minute retreat from its pot plan would seem to be an example
of comedian Bill Maher's theory of settling. We wanted legalization. We
would have settled for decriminalization. What we got was a whole new raft
of punitive laws aimed at growers and users. Or maybe the real problem is
as follows: We wanted "the true north, strong and free." We would have
settled for "a nominally independent nation." What we got was "Canada, the
country so polite it gave George W. Bush veto power in its own Parliament."

(Uh, who's "we"? Our poll showed only 20% of Canadians favour full
legalization - though 83% want the laws changed)
