JOINT IN CAR BUST UNJUST

It's incredible that with so much crime around, drug squad officers
still have to arrest a man for smoking a cannabis cigarette in
Lowestoft ("Drug Offence", 23 May). Lee Broughton, who was spotted
opening his car door with a joint, was ordered to pay a fine of UKP 30
and UKP 25 costs.

The UKP 30 would certainly not have paid for the time that the
officers spent on the case, which I am sure they would agree would be
better spent catching criminals with victims and the UKP 25 costs
would be far short of the court expenses for the session.

The public pay the rest. Is there anyone left out there that can show
any sense in that?
