HEADED TOWARD A POLICE STATE

Re "Thumbs Up" (editorial, Dec. 27): "It seems the nation's top justices
have realized our legislators have a role to play in running the country --
and a right to pass even unpopular laws -- and have decided to let them get
on with it. Good for them."

Thumbs-down on a childish editorial. I wonder how "unpopular" a law
incarcerating all Jews would be? No matter, the brain trust at the Ottawa
Sun would oppose any court challenge that questioned Parliament's right to
pass such a law.

It seems to me you want to abolish the Charter of Rights and Freedoms but
are too gutless to say so because of its popularity with ordinary
Canadians. Unless and until we can bring the knowledge and thinking skills
of opinion leaders such as yourself to adult levels, we are headed toward a
police state for sure.

(Good grief! Your inflammatory comparison to incarcerating Jews is
ridiculous. The court's point was that legislators have a right to pass
unpopular laws -- provided they are constitutional)
