POT SHOULD BE LEGALIZED

To the Editor:

I'm writing about James Perry's thoughtful letter: "Pot Should Be
Legalized" (8-05-04). I'd like to add that decriminalization only
lessens the penalties, it does nothing to put organized criminals out
of the marijuana business.

Only legalized products can be regulated, controlled and taxed by the
Canadian government. Speaking of taxes, even though one out of eight
Canadians used marijuana last year, seven out of eight did not. It
seems to me that the seven-out-of-eight Canadians who did not use
marijuana last year would be very much in favour of taxing marijuana.
On this side of the border, taxing another person's vice is very popular.

Best regards
