RODY GIVES COPS A WEEK TO PROBE ACTIVIST'S SLAY

DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte Wednesday gave the police a week
to investigate and submit to him a report of Tuesday's killing of a
former student activist and now a non-government organization (NGO)
worker, who is staunchly against summary executions and the death penalty.

The victim, identified as Rashid "Jun" Manahan, 27, married, of
Barangay 76-A in Bucana, was on his way to attend a human rights
conference in Bajada that time when two motorcycle-riding gunmen shot
him several times.

The manner of killing has been described as vigilante-style--the way
other summary execution victims were killed.

Duterte, however, believes the killing was not drug-related
incident.

"We would not jump into conclusion. We will investigate and dig
information about the background of the victim. We are looking for a
lady doctor to help us out," Duterte said, without elaborating the
last sentence.

Earlier reports showed Manahan was executive director of the Community
Resource Development Center and coordinator of Mamayang Tutol sa Bitay
(MTB)-Davao chapter.

He was also a student activist at the University of Mindanao some
years back and was the founder of Trivia Epsilon Omega, a fraternity
in UM.

Manahan succumbed to four gunshot wounds and died while on the way to
the Davao Medical Center.
