STORE OWNER FACING DRUG CHARGE AWAITS VERDICT ON HER BAIL

Carol Gwilt Is Being Held For Breaking Conditions

VANCOUVER - Carol Gwilt, owner of the Da Kine Food and Beverage store that
has been selling marijuana over the counter, will find out Wednesday if she
will be granted bail after being arrested for breaking her bail conditions.

Gwilt was first arrested Sept. 9 when police raided her store on Commercial
Drive and took her and seven employees into custody on charges of
possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

She was also charged with possession of proceeds from a crime.

After a night in jail she was released by Vancouver provincial court Judge
William Kitchen when she agreed to a number of undertakings, including that
she stay away from marijuana.

However, she was rearrested less than a week later when police stopped a
vehicle on Commercial Drive and charged her with breaching her bail conditions.

At a bail hearing Monday, Kitchen listened to arguments from federal Crown
counsel Mark Sheardown and Gwilt's lawyer Jason Gratl. The arguments are
subject to a ban on publication.

Gwilt has been in custody since Thursday.

Kitchen said he will make a decision on her bail application Wednesday.
