POLICE OFFICERS IN TWO SHOOTINGS BACK ON DUTY

The investigations of two shootings involving Fayetteville police
officers continue and the officers have returned to work, authorities
say.

An undercover officer shot Claybrook Adams outside a drugstore at
Raeford Road and Bingham Drive on Sept. 24; two officers shot Renauld
Curtis on Oct. 29 in the parking lot of an apartment complex off
Murchison Road.

The shootings happened during undercover drug operations. Police said
the men hit officers with their vehicles.

Adams is 25 and lives in the 900 block of Country Club Drive. Curtis
is 23 and lives in the 4300 block of Coolidge Street.

They were critically injured and taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical
Center after the shootings.

Adams has been released and is recovering from wounds to his mouth and
shoulder; Curtis, who was shot at least twice, was listed in good
condition Friday.

The officers had been placed on administrative leave with
pay.

The officer involved in the Adams shooting returned to work in
November and remains on desk duty, Sgt. Alex Thompson said Friday.

Thompson said the two officers who shot Curtis are again working as
undercover officers. Thompson did not know when the officers returned
to their former jobs.

Jerry Weaver is the special agent in charge of the State Bureau of
Investigation office in Fayetteville. He said in December that a
report on the Adams case could be finished by the end of the month.

Ballistics report

On Thursday, Weaver said agents have finished investigating but are
waiting on a ballistics report from the SBI crime lab in Raleigh.

Weaver said lab officials told him "they would have it to me by the
end of January."

Agents will do a "final synopsis" on the shooting and give the report
to Cumberland County District Attorney Ed Grannis by mid-February,
Weaver said.

Weaver and Police Chief Tom McCarthy have said that Grannis will
review the reports and decide whether the shootings were justified.

Agents have briefed Grannis once on the Adams shooting and may meet
with him again, Weaver said.

Police initially said they would file drug-related charges against
Adams; he was charged with assault. A Cumberland County judge ruled in
November that probable cause did not exist to charge Adams.

Agents have not spoken to Grannis about the Curtis shooting, Weaver
said.

Weaver said in December that the investigation into the Curtis
shooting should be finished in mid-January.

On Thursday, he said that agents have one more person to interview and
are waiting for test results from the SBI crime lab.

Weaver declined to identify the remaining person.

He said in December that agents had not interviewed Curtis but hoped
to before Christmas. Curtis and his doctor would decide when to
schedule the interview.
