POT-ENTIAL TERMINATION

Tom Neale, the city of Madison streets employee who tested positive
for marijuana (see Watchdog, 10/8/04), could lose his job. Neale
reported as ordered to a drug treatment session and quarreled with the
presenter over her definition of addiction: "I wasn't abusive, I never
called anybody names, but we went around a bit." He was asked to not
return. Roger Goodwin, Madison's interim Human Resources director,
says a substance abuse professional (SAP) must determine whether Neale
successfully completed treatment; otherwise, under federal rules, he
could no longer perform his current job.

As of press time, Goodwin was awaiting clarification from the SAP.
Neale, for his part, thinks it would "look really bad" if he were
fired after questioning city drug test rules, prompting Dave
Cieslewicz to order a review, now underway.
