POT GROW OP TURNS ITSELF IN

Calgary fire crews stumbled across something hot -- but a fire it was
not. An alarm system in the home at 171 Deer Path Court S.E. triggered
the call to the fire department yesterday, but when crews arrived,
in-stead of finding a fire, they uncovered a marijuana grow operation
inside the home.

"They had a bit more than an alarm system going off," said fire
department spokesman John Conley.

"It was pretty obvious right from the start, so we requested police."

Police Insp. Stewart Cooper said drug unit detectives verified the
property, which was otherwise vacant, was home to a commercial grow
operation.

They seized 663 plants worth an estimated $830,000 on the street.

Some plants were found behind a secret wall in the home.

Cops suspect the marijuana operation is linked to several others and
they are now hunting for suspects.

The discovery comes on the heels of several busts this month. Last
week, cops charged a pair of father-and-son teams after raids on
several grow operations in the northeast.
